Dog Safety. When summer hits Smyrna and Vinings, we all feel the heat—and so do our dogs. As temperatures climb, so does the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other dangers for our furry friends. At Dogma Dog Care, we’re here for the love of dogs, and we want to make sure you have all the tools to keep your pup safe and happy through the hot Georgia months.
Here are our top dog heat safety tips to help protect your pet during summer:
1. Avoid the Hottest Parts of the Day
It might be tempting to head out for a midday stroll, but that’s when heat is most intense. For your dog’s safety, take walks early in the morning or after sunset. These cooler hours help protect their paws from scorching pavement and reduce the risk of overheating.
If you’re unsure whether it’s safe to walk your dog, do the “hand test”—place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
Water is your dog’s best friend during hot weather. Make sure your pup always has access to fresh, cool water—indoors and outside. Bring a collapsible bowl or pet water bottle when you’re on the go, especially if you’re heading to the park or for a hike.
You can even add ice cubes or pet-safe frozen treats to their bowl for an extra cooling bonus.
3. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car
This one is critical. Even if the windows are cracked and it’s only for a “few minutes,” the inside of a parked car can heat up to deadly temperatures in no time. Just a 70-degree day can turn a vehicle into an oven—putting your dog at risk of fatal heatstroke.
If your dog can’t come inside with you, it’s better to leave them safely at home.
4. Know the Warning Signs of Heat Stress
Dogs can’t sweat like we do. Instead, they cool down by panting, which becomes ineffective in extreme heat. Learn to recognize signs of heatstroke, including:
- Heavy panting
- Excessive drooling
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting
- Bright red gums
- Collapse
If your dog shows any of these signs, move them to a cooler place immediately, offer water, and contact your vet.
5. Grooming Can Help Regulate Body Temperature
Regular grooming is essential during summer, especially for dogs with thick or double coats. At Dogma Dog Care, we offer professional grooming services to keep your dog’s coat clean, healthy, and breathable. A clean coat allows better airflow and helps your dog stay cooler.
